Employing Me
I'm a reasonably smart guy. I can read a financial statement, probably spot fraud, do basic accounting and writing, and handle just about any Windows- or Unix-based computer I need to. I've worked at a great money management firm, where I learned a lot about valuing stocks, keeping in touch with clients, and not keeping track of hours worked on a kludged-together TI-Basic program. I've worked at a produce wholesaler where I learned how other people sell food, how the grocery business works, and why it's good (and good fun) to diversify by playing around with stocks, futures, and anything else. I've worked at an environmental think-tank, where I learned that "Enhancing shareholder value" can sound downright sinister in a whitepaper that has "Greenwashing" in the title. And I fiddle around with this website, which I suppose makes me a competent typist, a good judge of when layouts go bad, and a Perl-literate coder who prefers to have his computer do the boring, repetitive thought so he can do fun stuff like write blog entries. Also, I run a portfolio or few for some people I know; good returns, but it's an informal thing, which is to say that 1) I'm not giving strangers advice, and 2) If anyone should be so foolish as to invest based on what I say in this blog and should then be so unfortunate as to lose money, it is absolutely not my fault and it's quite shameful to consider legal action rather than admitting to the (catastrophic) error. At the moment, I work for a recruiting firm focused on quantitative investors, which I quite enjoy.
I'm relatively busy now, but open to new options. However, I'm always interested in interesting new part-time opportunities that might fit in nicely with my work or my hobbie. So if you're involved in finance and would like to involve me in a research project, my résumé is at the ready. Drop me a line however you see fit, and we'll talk.
